Why does stucco crack in Alberta winters?

Water enters tiny cracks or porous spots, freezes and expands during the cold, and widens the crack, and the freeze-thaw cycle repeats all winter, turning a hairline crack into a serious one. Keeping water out is the whole point of a good system. Depend Exteriors builds stucco to shed water and resist Alberta's freeze-thaw.

How can I tell if my Alberta stucco needs repair?

Watch for hairline and wider cracks, chips and holes, bulging or soft spots, faded or chalky colour, and white salt stains, damp spots, or a musty smell that point to moisture in the wall. Catching these early keeps a small repair from becoming a re-cladding. Depend Exteriors offers a free on-site assessment across Alberta.

Can stucco be installed in Alberta winter?

Yes, with proper cold-weather methods. Stucco needs to cure above 5 Celsius, so winter work requires tented scaffolding, heated enclosures, and cold-weather additives to let the material set. The primary work window is April through October. Depend Exteriors does cold-weather stucco properly rather than cutting the corner that causes early failure.
